Snake Charmers in Jaipur, India

Snake charmers originated in ancient Egypt, but are now most commonly associated with India. Early snake charmers were often healers, who knew much about snakes and snake venom. Snake charming is now a dying profession, succumbing to mass media entertainment.

Snake charmers may still be seen in such cities as Jaipur, India. Jaipur is the capital of the Indian state of Rajistan, which was founded in 1727 and has the distinction of being India’s first “planned city”. Jaipur is a prime tourist locale because of its spectacular palaces and ancient forts.
